Message from the Vice Chancellor
Vice Chancellor
Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah

It is a matter of great pride and intellectual joy for me to share this message for the Directorate of Advanced Studies & Research (DASR) at Karakoram International University (KIU), Pakistan’s leading mountain university, established to serve the unique needs, aspirations, and challenges of mountain communities.

KIU holds a distinct mandate, reflected in its motto, “Gateway to Mountain Knowledge,” affirming its commitment to generating knowledge that is academically rigorous, socially responsive, environmentally conscious, and firmly grounded in the lived realities of mountain societies. As a seat of higher education, KIU strives to foster research and innovation that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities of mountain regions, while serving humanity in harmony with nature and society.

The Directorate of Advanced Studies & Research, through the statutory framework of the Graduate Research Management Committee (GRMC), plays a central role in realizing this mandate by overseeing postgraduate and doctoral research in accordance with university rules and the policies of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. At KIU, we firmly believe that meaningful research emerges from the harmonization of modern scientific approaches with indigenous knowledge and conventional wisdom developed over generations in mountain societies.

The Directorate ensures that MPhil/MS and PhD research upholds high academic standards while addressing critical issues such as climate change, sustainable livelihoods, natural resource management, education, health, social cohesion, and ethical development in fragile mountain ecosystems. Collaboration among research scholars, faculty members, and academic departments with the Directorate strengthens mountain focused research and promotes the creation of knowledge that is both transformative and socially impactful.

I commend the efforts of the Directorate, faculty members, supervisors, and research scholars for their dedication to building a vibrant research culture at KIU. I am confident that the Directorate of Advanced Studies & Research will continue to strengthen the University’s role as a hub of knowledge creation and innovation for the sustainable development and well-being of mountain communities at both national and global levels.
